From football fame to a prison term how the ex-Sydney Swan is rebuilding his life. For more than a decade Daryn Cresswell gave his all for the Sydney Swans. Over a career spanning 244 games he was smart, strong, unflinchingly brave and unwaveringly loyal. But when the curtain fell, things changed fast. Embroiled in a world of fast earns, chronic gambling and entangled in a web of lies, Cresswell lost everything - his wife, his money, friendships and, in the end, almost his life. In a very real way it was only jail that could save him. In Crezza, Daryn tells his story, one of hard-earned highs and self-inflicted lows. It's the story of a driven man who risked everything and lost. It's also the story of a man who clawed his way back.
Crezza From AFL Glory To Prison And The Long Road To Redemption Daryn Cresswell and Matthew Webber 9781459669963 Books
Daryn Cresswell was a very good AFL footballer with Sydney, over about ten years. He was a well paid professional who did not know what to do with his spare time and the money he had. He had no direction from the club or AFL on how to handle money or fame and following some initial success on placing bets on horse racing, he could not turn back. While strong in body he was weak in the head. Got sucked in to forging the signature of someone who owed him money and it was not long before he found himself in court and then prison. Through all this he lost his marriage, went bankrupt and began the slow crawl up from the ground floor. This is a quick but interesting read. One where he makes some interesting observations about those in the AFL, particularly on people like player and coach Paul Roos, and the corrections system in Queensland. You get the sense there is no rehab in prison and it is all about the law of the jungle and a relief to finish your sentence in one piece.
Jo, his second wife, supported him through the rough spots and today he is in a better place running his own business and coaching. This is a worthy book and reinforces the point that when going through hell, you keep going and don't stop.
