Pedalling Backwards has a great description, however it was too riddled with mistakes for me to fully embrace the storyline.When punctuation is incorrect, it throws off readers who are trying to figure out a simple sentence that should have been a breeze, had it been properly punctuated. And don't get me started on inept syntax throughout the chapters I forced myself to read.
I believe Julia Russell had a great concept in mind for Pedalling Backwards, however she truly must employ a talented editor in order for readers to comprehend what she is attempting to share with us.

This book is about 2 sisters Helena and Lizzie "Pedalling Backwards" and forwards (from past to present and back again) dealing with many issues in their lives. This book was slow to start and once you get about a third of the way in you can't put it down. The story flowed from past to present and while it was hard to see Lizzie deal with the death of her unborn baby and of her sister, you have cheer for her as she deals with the sadness in her life. A tad bit depressing - it will then sucks you in right to the very last page.
This book was not the norm. It was real at times, it was sad at times, it was filled with happiness at times. I really liked it.
Julia Russell has a way with words that is rare these days. I will be looking forward to seeing more from such a talented writer.

This book was really hare to get into. The ending of the book was satisfactory, but I would have preferred a few plot twists.
I loved this book.
I mean, I loved it when I wasn't mentally revising and editing the poor grammar and sentence structure. The frustration of having to re-read sections multiple times because the poor syntax and and lack of punctuation made it so confusing.
That said, I fell in love with the story and characters enough to muscle through, and I'm glad I did. I connected with the story on a deep personal level, having experienced much of what the main character is struggling with, and I thought the author did a fantastic job in describing the depth of pain and emotion that the main character was feeling. I used the quote feature on my frequently, feeling as though the author's words so perfectly expressed what I have thought and felt.
I would love to try something else by this author, but she really needs an editor.
The power of this book took me by surprise. With an excellent ability to capture sense of place, Julia Russell places the reader right in the centre of her story. Involvement in what could be a bit of a soap (but actually isn't) is unavoidable as she avoids hand-wringing and writes with an unpretentious style that just cuts to the core of her very human tale. I wanted to keep reading, enjoyed the interplay of her characters and felt her grief. I put this book on my quite by accident but would highly recommend it to people who enjoy contemporary fiction.
