American Vampire Long Road to Hell #1 Scott Snyder Books
Sadly, the American Vampire monthly comic series came to an end a few months back. Fans were left clinging on to hope that every once in a while writer Scott Snyder would throw us a bone in the form of a one-off or mini-series featuring the undead characters we've all come to know and love. The first one, An American Vampire Special: The Long Road to Hell, has arrived and serves as a tasty reminder of why readers are still obsessed with the ongoing saga. It also ushers in the good news that we will get a relaunch of the monthly title later this year.
An American Vampire Special: The Long Road to Hell transports us back to Nebraska in 1959. We've all heard a story like it before. Two young lovers hit the open road in a stolen car. However, this is no joyride. These two, known as the "Heartbreak Killers," are not your normal freewheeling lovers. They're hungry vampires fighting the urge to feed. If that's not bad enough, they're in big trouble and running from a pack of enraged vampires and undead hunter Travis Kidd.
Writers Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque give us yet another gift to entertain us and serve as a reminder of why we fell in love with the "American Vampire" saga to begin with. Although The Long Road to Hell is a simple story and nicely wrapped up in one issue, it's a magnificent addition to what's come before. The emotional conclusion of the tale is tragically poetic and will bring to mind the depressing tones of "Interview with a Vampire" and "Romeo and Juliet" without sacrificing the intensity and vigor we expect from the series.
Rafael Albuquerque's artwork is as immaculate as ever. He continues to keep the vampires visually scary and doesn't skimp on the gore. There are great full page illustrations of action that will catch the reader's attention and keep them turning pages.
The comic features some bad language, graphic violence, and a good amount of blood. It's suggested for mature readers by Vertigo and the warning should be heeded. However, there's nothing here you wouldn't see in an R-rated horror film.
An American Vampire Special: The Long Road to Hell should be classified as a horror comic. However, there's so much more to it. It's a complex tale of two lovers running from an unwanted destiny that was forced upon them. They desire to be together but fate won't allow it. It just so happens that the agents of fate in this case are undead creatures and a vampire slayer disguised as a greaser. It will definitely make fans of American Vampire happy as they wait for more.
